Viaplay Launches into the US Streaming Movie Market
On March 1, 2023, Nordic Noir streamed swiftly down Park Avenue in New York City to celebrate the US launch of Viaplay, the Nordic regions leading streaming platform. The platform is launching with three key titles, including Danish crime drama Trom, Norwegian thriller Furia, and acclaimed Young Adult Swedish drama Threesome.
Among those in attendance at the Swedish Residence at 600 Park Avenue were Viaplay EVP and Chief Content Officer, Filippa Wallestam, as well as acclaimed director, Lasse Hallström, and seasoned actors Ulrich Thomsen (Seen above) and Tom Blyth, star of the movie Billy the Kid. As the wine glasses were swirling, conversations in Swedish went over my head, both because I don’t speak Swedish, and also because so many people in the room were significantly taller than me. Nonetheless, I sidled up to Urlich and Filippa, introduced myself, and found them warm and welcoming.
As reported in Deadline, “Viaplay is seeking to partner with more major U.S. distribution platforms.” According to Filippa, “We are here for the long term.” As I discussed the plot overview of my own budding novel turned screenplay, Filippa admitted it “just gave me chills.” As Viaplay seeks to diversify into the US market, this might be a great sign.
With wine in hand, I also spoke to Lasse Hallstrom, director of Cider House Rules, Chocolat, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, My Life as a Dog, and the soon to be released Hilma (April 14, 2023). I expressed my admiration of his work, spoke about my book, and got more positive response. I mention my own work to credit the Viaplay team for being so gracious and genuine in listening to one only up and coming despite their established standing.
I am sure Viaplay will find great success here in the US, and the Viaplay team certainly deserves it, not just for their amiable nature, but because they take film making and quality drama so seriously.
